Henry’s Farmers Market is Just Awesome!
Just think it was probably only about a year or a year and a half ago when the only major grocery choices in the area were Ralph’s and Whole Foods. Ralph’s of course is a SoCal staple and pretty much has everything in terms of general grocery, meat, and produce. But foodies like myself were always drawn to the higher end grocers like Whole Foods – except the prices are pretty ridiculous on just about everything.
Then last year Trader Joe’s moved in and it was a new ball game. I pretty much entirely ditched Whole Foods (and Ralph’s, for that matter) and was loving Trader Joe’s. TJ’s is great in that they have a lot of great partially prepared meals and meats that go from stove to table in 30 minutes or less.
But, then, early this year, gloriously Henry’s opened up. Now, I must admit that since I don’t go to TJ’s much any more, I miss their meats just a little bit (especially some of that great carne asada they have). That being said, I love the produce, meat, and fish at Henry’s. They also have a great dry goods section in the middle of the store with a variety of nuts, candies, beans, coffee, you name it.
It really is great that in just a couple of short years things have gone from night to day in Woodland Hills with regards to groceries. Henry’s also wins out in that it is open daily until 10PM, whereas Trader Joe’s closes at 9, and even though whole foods is also open until 10, they pretty much start breaking everything down at 9 to 9:30. Also, has anyone else noticed that Whole Foods is MUCH less crowded than it used to be?

I believe Henry’s opens at 7 a.m., and shopping early is a great experience. Also, parking is not so precarious, my Henry’s gripe. Having boycotted Whole Food’s for their CEO’s attitude towards health care, I must say I sorely miss the plethora of organic produce. I may have to justify going back with the fact that most necessary purchases come from folks who do not share my view of “all for one, one for all”. I would then be back with my triangle shopping at all three markets, which includes TJ’s, and that might be good.
Yes, I do wish Henry’s would go more organic. I wish Trade Joe’s offered more loose produce, seems like all the stuff at their Woodland Hills store is pre-packaged. Is that something that all TJ’s do or is it just this one?
Not sure about TJ’s other out of area produce policy, but would bet it’s all the same in this area. TJ’s large portabello mushrooms come two to a package and have been very fresh so that one doesn’t have to use both at once… can’t say the same for Whole Foods.
Have you checked out The Baker one block east of Canoga on the South side of Ventura Blvd.? The really good is their coffee, the really bad is the noise. On premises bakery too delicious, and balance of food quite palatable, two meals for me.
I just went to Trader Joe’s for the first time in a couple of months yesterday, and they rearranged things a bit. The produce area is bigger, but I’m not sure if there is actually more variety.
I had a delicious sandwich at The Baker years ago, I should go back soon and check it out!
