Incorrectly Named Enclave at Warner Center Apartment Complex Nearing Completion
GlobeSt.com writes:
IRVINE, CA-Western National Properties, an affiliate of Irvine-based Western National Group, is nearing completion on construction of its 195-unit Enclave at Warner Center apartment complex, one of the relatively few new ground-up luxury apartment projects under construction in Southern California today. Rex F. DeLong, president of Western National Properties, tells GlobeSt.com that the company expects to have the building at 6710 Variel Ave. in Woodland Hills available for first move-ins in December.
I’d like to take this opportunity to rant about something. The area that this complex is in (bounded by De Soto, Vanowen, Canoga, and Victory) is not, in my opinion, or on any formal or informal map I’ve ever seen, known as Warner Center. To me, Warner Center ends at Victory. But, what you have is a few apartment complexes going in north of Victory trying to latch onto the ‘Warner Center’ name to attract a higher caliber of renter, and thus charge higher rents. According to the US Postal Service, this area is Woodland Hills, however there are some maps that map it as Canoga Park, and mail to this area goes through the 91303 Canoga Park post office on Sherman Way. (See LA Times Woodland Hills Map | Canoga Park Map)
Archstone Warner Center is guilty of using this misnomer, as will be Enclave Warner Center. The Avalon complex next to Enclave seems to be aware of the situation and went with the more cautious Avalon Warner Place name. Unsuspecting prospective tenants visiting these complexes will be shocked at the terrible maintenance condition of the streets in this neighborhood (as per standard disrespect that Canoga Park receives from the city of LA). Variel, Kittridge, and Eton in this little area look like streets in Baghdad.
Essentially my bone of contention here is that these apartment communities market these properties as something they simply are not – located in Warner Center, and arguably not even in Woodland Hills.

Outdoor Ice Skating Coming to Topanga Promenade Mall on Nov 25!
I was browsing around on Twitter today and came across this little bit of information. “Woodland Hills Ice” – a temporary/seasonal outdoor ice skating facility – will be opening at the Westfield Promenade Mall on November 25th. Seems like the opening was originally scheduled for October 30th, then November 11th. In an effort to get some clarification, I had a chance to exchange text messages with Whitney the company, and she tells me there have been a few delays, but things are looking good for November 25th. The temporary facility will be erected in the parking lot in the Topanga Canyon and Erwin quadrant of the property.
I believe they also had something like this at the Topanga Plaza Mall a few years back, and I’m sure it was a popular attraction. Follow @WHIce on Twitter to stay up to date.

Local Businesswoman Tanya Peel & All Green Things Featured on Episode of “Dan About Town” on Current TV
From Tanya’s Blog:
Well it was several months ago that a young man, Dan Magro, was phoning me to participate in a green episode for his new show Dan About Town – Current TV. I was thrilled and asked, “When do we shoot?”. In my former life I worked in the motion picture business and was excited that I did not have to worry about the unknown because I had 12 years under my belt working around cameras. The difference this time was being in front of the camera. A much different situation I have now learned!
Actually Tanya, you did a great job and seem extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the products you sell. It’s definitely a great and informative segment. This Dan Magro fellow takes a second to get used to at first, but I found myself watching other segments on the Current TV site and was quite amused. Tanya has been a supporter of this blog since the very beginning, so show her some love folks! Congrats Tanya, you are a publicity magnet!
You can follow Tanya & All Green Things on Twitter, too, folks!

Speaking of Crappy Infrastructure, Trivial Storm Causes 22,000 to Be Without Powers According to LADWP
According to LAist.com:
Thousands across Los Angeles are without power today, according to the L.A. Department of Water and Power. Some 20,000 customers in the greater South Los Angeles area are affected. In portions of Studio City and North Hollywood, about 1,100 customers are without power. Outages have always been reported in East Los Angeles, Mid City, and Woodland Hills. The department has increased the amount of crews working on power restoration.
Kind of unbelievable, but okay. Feel free to comment (once your power is back on) if this affected you.
PS: Did you know you can follow the LADWP (@LADWP) on Twitter? I see no mention of this issue though, as it doesn’t look like they tweet much.

A Concerned Reader Writes in About Nahai and LADWP Pipe Breaks
A concerned reader writes in:
Hi,
Has anybody heard of the situation at LADWP . I heard from a friend but has not confirm from news source but it says: LADWP chief Nahai resign as of September and hired a new person in charge. The new person in charge is a friend or aquaintance of Nahai. Nahai is then rehired as a consultant for 3 months but with pay equivalent to a year of his previous salary. Why do you want Nahai as a consultant when he resigned for his incompetence at handling the waterpipe situation. Also, LADWP has a monopoly in water. They can charge us whatever they want. So you can see if this is true then where our increase in fee for water and electricity is going. It is not used for fixing the aging pipes but it is wasted (like the water flowing out of burst pipes and sink holes). Typical bureaucratic bullshit!
I think most of the local pipe breaks happened before the amazing Girard was on the watch, but I think this might be a case of not noticing a problem until it’s right in your face.
While the overall pipe failure rate isn’t unusual, water officials say the number of so-called “major blowouts” in which pavement is ruptured has increased.
Water system head Jim McDaniel says there were 13 in the first 14 days of the month compared to 21 for all of last September.
Obviously, Nahai quit his post and had the city by the balls, because they had to keep paying him his $6,300 a week salary as a consultant just to avoid a total meltdown at the LADWP. But to me, it’s obvious that the infrastructure is aging and that the end of the day there is not enough money for maintenance, and all the resources go toward fixing the emergencies. This is so common with all of the infrastructure in this country.
Compounding that is that, as we all know, the SF Valley receives a disproportionate low amount of services compared to our LA brethren over the hill. I mean, don’t you ever notice that they have weekly street cleaning? They must figure that in the Valley we love dirty streets. Too bad we couldn’t push through our secession a few years back. I mean, Canoga Park still had some dirt roads until recently! Hell, they may even still have them.
Before secession could come out for a vote, the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) studied the fiscal viability of the new city and decided that the new city must mitigate any fiscal loss incurred by the rest of Los Angeles. LAFCO concluded that a new San Fernando Valley city would be financially viable, but would need to mitigate the $60.8 million that Los Angeles would lose in revenues. Secessionists took this figure as evidence that the Valley gave more money to Los Angeles than it received back in services
If anyone has relevant comments please post them on this article and I’ll do some digging and find relevant info to post.
