Dan’s Super Subs – Now That is a Sandwich!
Well, I’ve driven by the place hundreds of times, but never stopped in. But, as part of my mission to cover as much of Woodland Hills’ culinary offerings as I can, I put Dan’s Super Subs (22446 Ventura Blvd) high on my priority list. If you drive by around lunch time on the weekends, as I often have, you’ll find the place is absolutely bustling with activity – so you already know it’s a local favorite.
I have previously browsed their website, so I knew they were going to have a truly authentic menu of gut busting All-American classic subs. So, that being said, I threw all caution to the wind and ordered a #10 – Hot Pastrami with Cheese – and got “everything on it.” And boy, they absolutely were not kidding – they even had pickle spears thrown right in on the sandwich. Honestly, this sub reminded me of the kinds of sandwiches I used to get back east when I was in college. Truly impressive and delicious. I definitely recommend this place!
Dan’s Super Subs is now on Twitter (@DansSuperSubs), and they post weekly specials that require a password to get. Here’s this week’s:
DAN’S WEEKLY SPECIAL: BUY ANY SUB AND GET a free bag of chips…Password is = “green 41″ VALID OCT OCT 12 2009 OCT17 2009
TO CLAIM OUR WEEKLY SPECIAL: WRITE THE PASSWORD ON A PAPER ALONG WITH THE DETAILS OF THE SPECIAL AND PRESENT IT TO CASHIER BEFORE ORDERING
Now I see why they are always so busy on the weekends!

Girard and the Pepper Trees
I was finally polishing up the “About Woodland Hills” page today, mostly with info from the Chamber of Commerce, and in my criss-cross of web travels I found the great image above in the CSUN’s Oviatt Libary Digital Collections. If you ever want to search for old pictures of the SF Valley, that site is the place.
Also in my travels, I came across a great blog entry by a guy named Floyd B. Bariscale (a pseudonym?) with many photos and much insight about the Pepper Trees of Canoga Avenue. He has visited many landmarks of Los Angeles and blogged about them, check out his full site Big Orange Landmarks. The pictures and historical information are pretty amazing and the site is referenced in many blogs and articles.
Sadly, it seems he stopped updating the blog in April. Hopefully he is not dead or in prison.

Daily News Article Gives Bercovici Update
Even after getting the knife twisted in his back this weekend in the Ventura County Star – who pointed out that Westlake is doing just fine without him, with Nick Isham as their full time starting QB – Bercovici is remaining upbeat about ever taking the field for Taft, according to this Daily News article:
After being declared ineligible by the City Section last week because of an “athletically motivated transfer” after arriving from Westlake High, quarterback Michael Bercovici of Taft of Woodland Hills remains upbeat and hopeful he will be cleared through the appeals process.
“I really enjoy Taft, and the team has welcomed me. I’m having a lot of fun here,” Bercovici said. “I’m doing everything I can to be part of the football team, and as of right now I’m just practicing with the team. I think everything should be fine in the end. I just want to help the team.”
Taft coach Matt Kerstetter said additional paperwork substantiating Bercovici’s transfer has been forwarded to the City Section, and Kerstetter expects a decision soon.
Maybe the coach is right and things will work out for Bercovici to play. But, it remains to be seen that Bercovici didn’t switch schools just because he wasn’t going to be starting at Westlake. Which, he obviously did. Did I just say that out loud?

Daily News Girls Tennis Article Features Samantha Jacobs of El Camino Real
Came across this very detailed Daily News article about the girls tennis programs at El Camino Real and Reseda High Schools, that features two friends and rivals – Samantha Jacobs at ECR and Alexandra Tallas at Reseda.
Longtime friends and USTA tournament doubles partners outside of their West Valley League rivalry, Jacobs and Tallas, a junior, are two of the City’s elite players.
Great article and worth the read.
