Checkin’ Out The Chicago Dog At The Weenie Shack
A couple weeks ago when I went to visit Soup’s for the first time, I walked by a new place called The Weenie Shack that I hadn’t noticed before. It’s nestled between Paoli’s and Pickwick’s Pub at 21014 Ventura Blvd.
Well, yesterday I decided to stop by for a little hot dog lunch. I found the decor of the place to be very appropriate, as the walls are lined with hot dog paraphernalia. Now, I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not hot dog expert, but from what I’ve read recently Vienna Beef cooks up a good dog, and natural casings are the way to go. Both of these desirably doggie traits are available at The Weenie Shack, so we’re already off to a good start.
I met Chris, who owns The Weenie Shack with his sister, and asked him what his most popular hot dog was. He suggested I get the Chicago Dog ($5.25), with a big, juicy natural casing Vienna Beef hot dog, topped with mustard, relish, diced tomatoes, hot peppers, and celery salt. I also made it a combo with chips and a drink for an extra $2.
Chris was friendly, knowledgable, and quickly made me my hot dog. All hot dogs at The Weenie Shack are made to order, so no gross dirty water dogs here. And, I must admit I was stunned with how beautiful the hot dog that was handed to me appeared. Look at that baby!
The Weenie Shack has a couple of tables outside, shaded by enormous Vienna Beef umbrellas so I chose to eat my meal curbside. The hot dog was excellent and man were those peppers spicy! The Weenie Shack serves up an excellent hot dog and I’m looking forward to going back and trying out some other stuff on the menu.
Many people in the valley know about Fab’s Hot Dogs in Reseda and it is definitely one of the best and most popular hot dog places around. I think The Weenie Shack provides a good alternative to Fab’s long lines and long waits, and offers friendly service, and is conveniently located right in the heart of Woodland Hills. And while The Weenie Shack is by no means a large establishment, it does offer considerably more seating accommodations, particularly inside, than Fab’s.
Good luck to Chris and his sister, and I hope you guys check it out soon! And by the way, they are hiring for counter help so if you or someone you know is looking for a job, have them drop in.

I assumed you also been to “The Stand”. The original in Encino but now also on Canoga Ave. Great dogs but also burgers. Beer and Wine. Jazz and entertainment.
Per, actually I had a burger there a few days ago that was quite good! I will be reviewing it shortly for the blog. I am very happy that you’re a reader, and a contributor!
