A Friend Of Dean Greenwalt Writes In, And His Official Obituary
It’s been a little while since I’ve heard about his case or anything else regarding his life. I received this e-mail today from one of his friends:
Hi,
My name is Evelyn C. and I am in shock. I read about the passing of Dean Greenwalt. He was a friend of mine for many years. I live in Chicago but knew Dean through his neighbor, Cassy who passed away three years ago. I called Dean several times and got an answering machine without his usual recording. I also sent him cards and email but heard nothing back which was strange because we talked at least a couple of times a month.
I do have a picture of Dean, several in fact. I do not know his family’s phone numbers in South Dakota but hope to be able to track them down.
Please let me know if you have any more information. I did not see your name on the memorial website.
Thank you,
Evelyn Crews
I did some Google searching this morning to see if there was anything new, and I did find Dean’s obituary in a South Dakota paper (Rapid City Journal):
Dean Greenwalt
WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – Our beloved brother, uncle, and cousin, Dean Greenwalt, lost his life Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in a crosswalk near his home in Woodland Hills.
Dean was born July 8, 1943, in Rapid City, S.D., to Gerald and Eva Greenwalt. He was raised on the family farm located near Owanka, S.D. He was very interested in genealogy and proud that the farm was where his mother was also raised; having been purchased by his maternal grandfather in 1918. He graduated from New Underwood (SD) High School in 1960 and from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in 1964 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. During college he was in the Reserve Officer Training Corps. After graduation he worked for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft in St. Louis. Dean joined the Army and was stationed in Germany for two years as a 2nd Lieutenant. After his discharge, he was employed by Hughes Aircraft Co. in Los Angeles in the aerospace industry where he worked on aircraft and missile guidance systems. His projects included the Patriot and Cruise missile systems. Dean retired at age 55 to pursue his many interests.
He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and neighbors. Dean was a kind, honest and gentle man who always had time to lend a helping hand. His engaging smile, intellect and love of good conversation were some of his most endearing qualities. Dean lived in a quiet, comfortable and close knit neighborhood. His neighbors reflected that “Dean was the heart of the neighborhood” and that “his spirit will live on forever here.”
In addition to his many friends and wonderful neighbors, he is survived by his brother, Craig (Susie) Greenwalt and his sister, Carol (Joe) Rickert. He is also survived by cousins, numerous nieces, nephews and several great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and twin sister, Deanne Dorsey.
A private family service was held in Woodland Hills. A celebration of Dean’s life with his many friends and neighbors is pending in California. Arrangements were coordinated by Osheim Schmidt and Funeral Home in Rapid City.
