Councilman Dennis Zine Wants You To Know LADWP Rate Increase Not His Fault
Los Angeles Councilman Dennis Zine (Council District 3) wants us to know that even though we are all about to get screwed with higher LADWP electricity rates, it’s not his fault.
He writes in an e-mail:
Zine Opposes DWP Rate Increase
Due to the high volume of calls and emails I have received regarding the proposed DWP Energy Cost Adjustment Factor (ECAF), I wanted to make my position very clear to my constituents. Today the City Council voted to direct the DWP Board of Commissioners to adopt a one-time .5 cent/kWh increase in the ECAF Cap beginning April 1st. This would translate to approximately a 4-6% increase in ratepayers’ bills. I voted “No” on this increase and I am staunchly opposed to any action that would place a greater burden on taxpayers and businesses during these trying economic times. To be very clear, I support the environmental efforts to green our City and to bring more jobs in this sector to Los Angeles; however, this proposal does nothing to reduce the City’s dependence on coal, nor could the DWP answer my questions today regarding bringing clean projects and jobs to the City. The DWP currently has numerous jobs and contracts outside our City and State which makes it even more difficult to defend the benefits of this proposal when it will not boost the local economy. I will remain steadfast against any increases presented by the DWP Board in these times of economic uncertainty.

Wow, I remember my first post on this blog was about LADWP paying the ex-ceo of LADWP a consultation fee. Someone wrote in that it was normal practice until the new ceo is up to speed. All I know is that my LADWP bill has increased more than inflation the last 8 years. In 2004, peack summer, I paid $200, this was with a house with a big yard. Last year I paid $365 at peak summer. I barely use the AC, the water usage was barely into the 2nd tier penalty. Look at the bill, most charges have gone up 40% like the sanitation charges. We should have seceded from LA city.
Dennis Zine is dead to me until he secures the re-paving of the crumbling streets in/around Woodland Hills Elementary (and elsewhere, I’m sure). Unfortunately, unless it involves a photo-op, “Do-nothing Dennis” is MIA.
On my LADWP bill, the sanitation charges have tripled in the last 5 years. This makes me especially mad since I don’t even put out my trash cans every week. We consciously try to reduce our trash output by composting, recycling, etc. I’d love to be able to opt out of the trash pickup system and I’m sure a cheaper private enterprise would move in to fill the gap.
Who do we write to in order to complain about this and other insane fees ? My ‘energy used’ is $93 for two months yet my ‘Energy cost adjustment’ is $82 for two months… absolutely ridiculous. On top of all that my ’solid resource fee’ is $97 for two months, how is my solid resource fee more than my energy fees ? Total bill is $367 dollars for two months … I’m fed up.
