2 Big Woodland Hills Police Events, 0 Related Nixle Alerts. LAPD Dropping The Ball?
I’d like to point out that in the past week, there have been 2 big police incidents in Woodland Hills that I know of. The first being the May 5th bomb threat at the Rite Aid (Topanga & Ventura) and the second being yesterday’s Best Buy shooting (Owensmouth & Victory). Both incidents resulted in massive police presence, street closures, helicopters, etc.
Now, the LAPD has a much touted system called Nixle that is from what I understand designed to be used to notify the public in these situations – in real time. It should be pointed out that in both incidents LAPD failed to use the system. However, during the same interval the system has been used to high-five about past crimes being solved, one about a purse snatching and the other about a burglar being apprehended (Canoga Park).
During a recent e-mail with LAPD Topanga Area SLO Brent Rygh he himself brought up to me that this was a known issue that he would be working on. Why isn’t the Nixle system being used for breaking police activity that the public should be informed about as it is happening as it has been in the past?

Whoops.
You mean you couldn’t just turn on your TV and see what was happening at the Best Buy? The police don’t have time to be sending out “tweets” while a major incident is going on. Think about it. Do you want them protecting you, or sitting at a computer sending out “tweets” or whatever they are called on Nixle? You are probably one of those ones who walks up to the crime tape and demands to know what is going on. “I live here. What is going on?”
Tom,
I figured some idiot would write a message like this. What do you think this is, Mayberry? When a crime happens every cop runs out of the station? They have command and control, people are supposed to be doing these notifications and they aren’t.
Further, you’d be very surprised about the percentage of these things that gets covered on your Tv. It’s very, very low. For instance, the big hoopla about the bomb threat at Rite Aid wasn’t covered at all, but still lead to hours of street closures.
Really, I suspect the degradation of Nixle is either a policy decision or a laziness/forgetfulness situation more than anything else.
The LAPD messed something up? Impossible. They are after all expert crime fighters, well only if that crime is not having a front license plate or having registration that had expired 36 hours earlier. They also moved the police station from the new one in Chatsworth to Chopotle on Topanga & Ventura and Poquito Mas on Ventura & Canoga. Every time I go into those two restaurants I see a minimum of 4 cops in there.
I am also sure that they paid $2,000,000,000 for this Nixie system for it either not to really work or not to really use it. That is our LAPD. Time to start the Valley Succession again……
Yeah, who are those cops to think they have a right to eat?!?!
Grow up, idiot! You sound like a 12-year old who was caught jaywalking.
Girard,
I hope the police remember that when your house is getting shot up and you also, they stop at the computer first, put in a Nixle notification, and then come to your home. You are so stupid. What, you could never make it in the police department so you have to criticize? What did you do to find out what was going on before the invention of Nixle and other related items?
Sean, do you not get to eat when you are at work? You realize there are about 300 people assigned to Topanga division, and West Valley officers still come into Topanga to eat. Maybe they can send out a Nixle notification when they are coming so you won’t be so upset.’
Guys,
Girard does have a point, and that is that the LAPD is using Nixle but the public’s expectations are sometimes higher than the amount of information put out. I am a Watch Commander at LAPD Topanga and use the system. What gets sent out depends on who the watch commander is that day, whether that person has been trained to use the system, how comfortable they feel about sending out messages, and if they have the time to do so. I think with time, training, and public support of the system, the quality and quantity of the messages will get better. Thanks for everyone’s support of our use of the system.
Sergeant Cathy Riggs
Topanga Watch Commander
The LAPD has a horrible reputation for a reason. The reason is that they are horrible at what they do. Do they prevent graffiti? NOPE How many West Valley murders in the last month like 4 or 5 at this point.
What they are really good at is harassing people with bullshit tickets and sitting around restaurants doing $&#^ all. I can write a novel of the times I have called for car break-in’s, vandalism, and theft and they actually laugh in your face at the suggestion of showing up and doing real CRIME FIGHTING. They cannot be disturbed from the REVENUE GENERATING that they seem to be oh so good at.
If you are happy with how your tax revenue is being spent than I have a bridge somewhere to sell you
