The Mediterranean Salmon Salad At Panini Cafe Is AWESOME!
Okay, okay, I know it seems like I might be overly singing the praises of Panini Cafe in Woodland Hills. But, I really do love the place. Plus it’s very convenient for me, has very easy parking, and did I mention, great food!? This Saturday at around 2pm I stopped in for a quick lunch. The place was hopping! I actually sat outside since it was a nice day and pretty full inside. A good friend of mine had previous told me that the Mediterranean Salmon Salad was phenomenal, so I knew that was something I had to try.
From the menu, the Mediterranean Salmon Salad contains: Oven Roasted Salmon on a Bed of Mixed Greens Topped With Cucumber, Tomatoes, Red Onion, Olives, Feta Cheese, Fresh Tarragon and Lemon.
All I can say is that ever since I had this salad I have been having dreams about it. It’s awesome. I’ve never had Feta Cheese before on a salmon salad, and every bite of this salad truly impressed me. I love the olives as well. Awesome. If you are a lover of salmon salads, you won’t want to miss this one.

You Can Get a Pretty Good Breakfast Burrito At The Stand, But No Orange Juice
As previously blogged, The Stand in Woodland Hills launched it’s breakfast menu and extended hours back on March 1st. I was finally able to get in there last weekend to check it out, and as promised I had the Breakfast Burrito. The burrito contains eggs, your choice of sausage or bacon (I went with sausage), pepper-jack cheese, stand potatoes, avocado, and a side of salsa. At $6.95, it’s not necessarily the cheapest breakfast burrito in the world, although by comparison to sit-down restaurants’ offerings like The Cheesecake Factory’s Sunrise Fiesta Burrito (which is quite huge) at $TBD, it’s very affordable.
On the plus side, I’d say that The Stand’s Breakfast Burrito is actually very delicious. The best thing about it is actually tortilla they are using. It has a quality about it that is almost sweet, and it really adds a level of flavor to the burrito beyond the contents. The salsa was also quite tasty. The Stand also has little packets of Tabasco sauce which I enjoyed with child-like enthusiasm, even going so far as to take a few home.
One downside that I can see to the breakfast at The Stand is the lack of Orange Juice on the menu. I ended up having a fountain drink, which is okay for me, but I can see some people being turned off by that. They do however have coffee, bottled soft drinks, and as mentioned, the fountain drinks. It seems like they are getting asked a lot about the OJ issue, so perhaps they will add it to the menu. I mean, after all, to many folks orange juice at breakfast, particularly at a restaurant, is like turkey on Thanksgiving – you just gotta have it. Am I wrong?
All in all, it was a nice pleasant atmosphere and not too crowded at all for a Saturday morning, so I think I will definitely be back for more.

Doing Some Damage At the Roy’s Aloha Hour In Woodland Hills
Ever since I heard about the new Roy’s Aloha Hour happy hour that was introduced earlier this month, I’ve been looking for the right occasion to check it out. A good friend of mine seemed unusually unsettled by the untimely death of the world’s smallest man He Pingping, so it seemed like a fitting occasion to knock down some drinks and celebrate the little man’s life. Or something like that.
Everything on the Roy’s Aloha Hour menu is just $5, including and assortment of about 20 cocktails. I arrived at Roy’s shortly before my friends, so I kicked things off by ordering the Mango Mojito. Delicious!
After checking out the extensive menu of Roy’s Hawaiian Fresh Cocktails (pictured above) I decided to really amp things up and get my swerve on Hawaiian style with the delicious Basil Cucumber Collins. I’m a big fan of the cucumber, it’s one hell of a fine vegetable.
After I polished off my Basil Cucumber Collins my friends arrived. They kicked off their celebration of Pingping’s life with another Mango Mojito and a glass of Terra Noble Chile Sauvignon Blanc.

We miss you He Pingping. You can smoke 2 cartons a day in heaven, because they don't have lung cancer there.
After getting ourselves sufficiently lubricated with delicious tropical drinks it was time to knock down some $5 appetizers.
Roy’s is doing some great Lobster appetizers for the Aloha Hour, including the Crunchy Golden Lobster Potstickers and Lobster California Rolls (both pictured above). Additionally, we tried the awesome Tempura Crusted Ahi Roll and the over-the-top amazing Wagyu Beef Sliders, which are served on Hawaiian sweet rolls and accompanied by sweet potato fries. Phenomenal! My friends are vegetarians (they shun meat but they do eat fish), and Roy’s was kind enough to allow us to substitute the beef in one of our sliders orders to avocado. Awesome! See more pictures of these items as well as some other drinks in the full gallery below.
Overall, the Roy’s Aloha Hour is a winner and is available Monday thru Friday from 4:30pm to 6:30pm.

Red Hat Restaurant Moves Into Old Mark & Jane’s Place Space
As previously blogged, the short lived South African themed restaurant Mark & Jane’s Place closed back in November. A couple of weeks ago I noticed Persian eatery Red Hat Restaurant has opened in the space, located at 22990 Ventura Blvd (right next door to Topanga Pizza). Seems like there is also a new salon next door, Studio 9 Hair Design. Next time I am in the mood for some Persian food I’ll check out Red Hat and see how it is.

YD’s West Hills Official Becomes Yankee Doodle’s
An astute reader writes in:
I read your article about YD’s Sports Bar and Grill in West Hills. Let you know that YD’s Sports Bar and Grill is change of name now called “Yankee Doodles Bar Sports and Grill” and replace new signs around the building. My dad and I were surprised to see them change it. We don’t know why. I saw alot of people at YD’s for UFC 111 and a Lakers game. Today’s biggest PPV event of the year is WWE Wrestlemania 26 at YD. Go WWE!! Thanks, Jose
Thanks Jose for letting me know. I drove by today to confirm the change and take a few pictures.

Checking Out The Coffee And Breakfast Combo At Panini Cafe Woodland Hills
A couples weeks back, when it was raining nearly every day, I decided to stop by Panini Cafe in Woodland Hills again for another delicious breakfast. A reader of one of my previous posts had made a comment that they were not a big fan of the coffee, so I figured it was my obligation to check it out.
As you might imagine, since Panini Cafe is “Mediterranean” themed, the coffee is quite strong. I can see that this would not be for everyone. Thankfully, I am the kind of person that can cream and sugar up any cup of coffee to my satisfaction, so I had no major issues with it.
For breakfast, I decided on the Breakfast Combo - 2 pieces of French Toast, 2 Eggs Any Style, 2 Pieces of Pepper Bacon or Apple Chicken Sausage with Roasted Potatoes or Fresh Fruit Cup – for $10.95. I went with the bacon and scrambled eggs, and additionally threw caution to the wind and added Swiss cheese to the eggs for about a dollar more.
As far as I’m concerned it was a great breakfast. I’m a sucker for French Toast, which I previously checked out at BJ’s, and they also cook up a mean slice at Panini Cafe. The rest of the dish was great, including the bacon, and I’m a particular fan of the roasted potatoes. It’s a great power breakfast for a busy blogger like myself!
