Some Information On Payman Engheta Death From A Friend
A friend of Payman Engheta posted this comment over the weekend. He went to the scene of the accident and talked to some people, so I thought it worthy of reposting.
Payman Engheta was a close friend. I loved him dearly. I just visited the site tonight where the car crash occurred and talked extensively with some witnesses. There were many flowers and candles at base of the tree where the crash occurred. Plus, there was an 8 x 10 picture of Payman’s face in a picture-frame nailed to the tree.
There were about 25 people on the patio of the restaurant called “Cavi at the Big Oaks” when the accident occurred. They say Payman frequented Cavi. The restaurant is a popular destination for motorcyclists. Payman rode his motorcycle to the restaurant and ate there several times. This time, Payman was in his Lamborghini automobile driving the curvy Bouquet Canyon Road where the restaurant is located.
When he drove past the people they heard that he both downshifted and stepped on the gas. According to the witness who described the situation, the rear tires spun out from the acceleration, making long black tire marks on the road. He said the car likely accelerated from 40 mph to 80 mph over a short distance and that he hit the tree going about 80 mph. (Again, I am reporting verbatim from an eyewitness.)
There is dirt and gravel strewn from the un-paved driveway of the restaurant. The combination the tires spinning out from acceleration, the curve in the road, and the dirt and gravel from the driveway, made the rear-end of the car, where the heavy engine is located, spin to the left. The front tires went off the right side of the road over a 2-foot dirt embankment. With the front wheels sunken into the soft dirt, the acceleration of the car, and the heavy engine in the back of the car, made the rear of the car whip violently to the left.
Unfortunately for my wonderful friend, a fairly large tree was in the wrong place. The driver-side door of the car slammed very forcefully against the tree. The tree sunk about 3 to 4 feet into the drivers-side door. The car hit so hard, that the three-inch think bark was ripped from the front of the tree where the main-impact took place about three-feet wide and five feet high swath. The car literally “wrapped around” the tree with such force, that there is a large gash in the bark of the tree on the opposite side of the impact, where the rear of the car bent around the back side of the tree.
A nurse was eating at the restaurant. She said, “breathe, breathe.” He seemed to respond to the nurse by taking deep breaths. He was cut out of the car and airlifted by helicopter to Providence Holy Cross Hospital where I am very sad to say he later died of his injuries.
I visited the site because I just had to know what happened and how my friend’s life was so tragically taken. I also thought others who loved him would like to know more about what occurred.
We love you, Payman. We love your family and they will be in our thoughts and prayers.

It’s Neighborhood Council Election Day – Woodland Hills Stakeholders Can Vote From 2pm to 8pm At Fire Station 84
Neighborhood Council elections are today. Residents of Woodland Hills should do their part today and vote at Fire Station 84 which is at 21050 Burbank Blvd right near Kaiser Permanente. Polling is from 2pm to 8pm and you need not be a registered voter, just a stakeholder. Essentially bring your ID or a bill or business card at least with an address in one of Woodland Hills’ 7 areas. Neighborhood Councils are important because the LA City council would pretty much gladly ignore localized needs unless the councils are there to open up their eyes and ears. This is especially true of the highly neglected San Fernando Valley.
Most people don’t know, but today is election day in the San Fernando Valley for 11 neighborhoods. If you live, work or are otherwise a stakeholder in Canoga Park, Chatsworth, Granada Hills North, Granada Hills South, North Hills West, Northridge East, Northridge West, Porter Ranch, West Hills, Winnetka, and Woodland Hills, you may be eligible to vote.
Unfortunately, June Lagmay and her City Clerk’s Office have done a terrible job communicating the basics of who, what, where, when by hiding all pertinent information in a series of PDFs so to take part is more of a puzzle than anything else (add to that, zero press releases announcing this first of a kind effort). Your best bet is call their office at (213) 978-0444 to figure it out. Or even better, find your neighborhood council’s webpage and they will most likely have all the info you need. All voting will take place between 2 and 8 p.m. today.
Elections for other neighborhoods will continue through upcoming months.
You can visit the Woodland Hills Warner Center Neigbhorhood Council’s election page to learn more about the election. I agree with LAist that the way the city clerks website is laid out with a bunch of strange interactive PDFs is really stupid. Haven’t they heard of this thing called the World Wide Web. They really don’t need to do this in PDFs. But, here is the link to the PDF for the elections.
This link takes you straight to the PDF with the Candidate List and Personal Statements.

Passenger Causes Havok On MTA Bus In Woodland Hills
Of course this happened at the nexus of the degenerate universe here in Woodland Hills, the corner of Topanga Canyon Blvd and Ventura Blvd. Follow the link to ABC7 for some video coverage.
WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. (KABC) — LAPD officers responded to a call of a L.A. County Sheriff’s deputy involved in a fight with a suspect in Woodland Hills.
LAPD officers responded to a call of an L.A. County Sheriff’s deputy involved in a fight with a suspect in Woodland Hills.
A suspect was taken in custody and an ambulance was requested at the scene.
The fight occurred near the intersection of Ventura Blvd. and N. Topanga Canyon Blvd.
Eastbound traffic on Ventura Blvd. was slow, but westbound traffic was at a standstill due to multiple police cars and fire engines on scene.
The suspect was subdued by at least six to eight officers, then strapped face-down to a gurney and loaded onto an ambulance. The suspect could be seen repeatedly banging his head on the gurney.
Traffic was expected to be affected till at least 6 p.m.
The suspect was confirmed as a bus passenger. MTA bus service was affected on the Ventura Blvd. route.
According to MTA spokesman Jose Ubaldo, MTA bus line 161 was traveling from Canoga Park to Thousand Oaks at 4:57 p.m. A male passenger inside the bus was reportedly harassing a female patron. The bus driver stopped the bus and called for deputy assistance.
The suspect gave the deputy a hard time when he arrived. The deputy called for more assistance. During a scuffle, someone used pepper-spray inside the bus, and the bus driver was hit, according to Ubaldo.
The suspect was treated by paramedics on scene and transported to a hospital.
The bus was cleared of passengers due to lingering pepper-spray inside.

A Cookie, A “DUI” Checkpoint, And A Redbox Rental
Well, tonight I decided I’d check out the DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on Topanga Canyon Blvd. I parked at the Topanga Promenade mall and stopped by Corner Bakery Cafe and got myself an M&M Cookie then walked over to eyeball the checkpoint.
It was about 8:40pm and it didn’t seem like they were making any arrests or tows just yet. Still getting warmed up, I suppose. The checkpoint was on southbound Topanga Canyon Blvd just south of Oxnard Street. Interestingly, it didn’t seem like they were making any effort to stop folks who turned left onto Califa Street. I’m assuming that’s where all the drunk people and illegal immigrants would turn. [note to people who don't understand sarcasm here - I'm saying this with SARCASM!]
Afterward, I stopped by the Redbox DVD rental kiosk at the 7-11 store at 20914 Ventura Blvd. I’ve never actually used a Redbox kiosk before, but I figured I’d give their $1/night DVD rentals a shot. I rented Extract. A very fine film.

LAPD Peforming “Sobriety Checkpoint” A/K/A “Revenue Shakedown” In Topanga Area TONIGHT
The LAPD will unfortunately be conducting a “sobriety and drivers license checkpoint” tonight in our area. It is well known and widely reported that these checkpoints have little to do with catching drunk drivers and are essentially about the revenue they collect when they catch people driving on suspended licenses. Your vehicle will be impounded. The notice included a map which had the intersection of Califa St and Topanga Canyon Blvd marked, however if it s not 100% clear if that is where the checkpoint will be.
If you encounter this checkpoint, please disregard your civil rights before entering. I joke not when I tell you this is one of the most evil things going on with the government of California today. Watch the video below for more information as well.
A sobriety and drivers license checkpoint will be held tonight.
The purpose of the sobriety checkpoint is to reduce the number of traffic collisions involving intoxicated drivers and hit and run collisions. During this year, residents residing in the Topanga Area endured 19 driving under the influence-related and 99 hit and run traffic collisions. The checkpoint will educate the community to use designated drivers and not drink and drive. Our message is simple: If we catch you drunk, you will be arrested.
It is the Los Angeles Police Department’s goal to continue providing public awareness on the dangers of drinking and driving, and the laws concerning driving without a valid driver’s license. Motorists approaching a checkpoint will observe traffic signs, information and police officers advising that a checkpoint is ahead. Once diverted into a lane, each motorist will be detained momentarily while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint.
Funding for this checkpoint is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. We can all help make our streets safer, please report Drunk Drivers – Call 911.
Update: Full time and location info from LAist (8pm to 3am).
