This Weather Is A Downer, But You Can Still Skate Away Your Blues
I really love rain, but this particular weather we’ve had is just not enjoyable. I did a quick drive by of Woodland Hills Ice today, and saw some teenagers having quite a blast skating in the rain. Not my cup of tea, but remember they are open rain or shine!

I noticed last week that the pumpkin patch at Woodlake & Ventura Blvd (23210 Ventura Blvd, Woodland Hills, CA) had been fully converted to a Christmas tree lot. Today I decided to drop by and get some pictures for your viewing pleasure. They were doing a brisk business – it’s nice to see folks in the holiday spirit! Detailed Write Up About “Super Car Sundays” Drama On TheAcorn.com
I first heard about this from Senior Lead Officer Rygh last month, and last week TheAcorn.com published a good article on the subject:
The popular and long-running Sunday car show at the El Camino Shopping Center in Woodland Hills has screeched to a halt and is being shut down due to a complaint that the event was taking up too much parking space.
For the past six years the show has been held in the parking lot on Mulholland Drive near Old Town Calabasas in the same shopping center that is home to a major grocery store, banks and small businesses.
But last month the activity came under fire after the shopping center’s owner filed a lawsuit against the Village Coffee Roaster, the epicenter of the activity. A court hearing was scheduled for yesterday.
Regency Centers acted on complaints from Vons, according to Jim Arden, a loyal car show attendee and attorney for the Coffee Roaster. Apparently the grocery store’s customers were having trouble finding places to park on Sundays and were complaining to the grocery store employees.
After the lawsuit was filed, sheriff’s deputies and security personnel were assigned to the shopping center to keep the show cars away.
Dustin Troyan, who is named in the lawsuit, runs the Village Coffee Roaster and called the shopping center’s move a “nowin situation.”
But other stores had their biggest days when the show came to town, especially the Coffee Roaster.
“Sundays were our busiest days, and it was a lot of these small businesses’ busiest days,” Troyan said. “Now they’ve effectively put us out of business. I’m looking for work. My employees all have second jobs. After December, we won’t even be open anymore on Sundays.”
It’s a good and meaty article, and in my opinion a must read for Woodland Hills residents.

Dustin Troyan Of Village Coffee Roasters Organizes Toy Drive With LAPD
The Daily News did a very nice write up yesterday of Dustin Troyan of Village Coffee Roasters (23351 Mulholland Dr). They write:
For the past six years, Dustin Troyan, manager of Village Coffee Roasters in Woodland Hills, has been organizing a unique toy drive for local police, sheriff’s and fire departments to make inroads with these kids.
Last Sunday morning, more than 60 classic car and motorcycle owners met at his shop, and with a full police escort – lights on, sirens blasting – headed for the nearest Toys R Us store to kick off the first leg of the Motor 4 Toys drive.
“We took over the parking lot and the car club community bought a ton of toys for the kids,” said LAPD Detective Darren Holst of the West Valley Community Police Station in Reseda.
The article also let’s us know that there will be a car show this Sunday, December 6th in the Anthem Blue Cross parking lot:
The second leg is this Sunday, Dec. 6, and you’re invited to help them out. Bring a new, unwrapped toy valued at least $10 and you’ll get into a classic car show for free.
More than 4,000 cars – hot rods, muscle and race cars, private collections and pro-touring cars – will be on display at the Anthem (Blue Cross) building parking lot in Warner Center, 21555 Oxnard St. from 8a.m. to noon. The toys collected will be handed out in the next few weeks by police officers to kids throughout Los Angeles living in foster care, battered women’s shelters, and neighborhoods where there are families in need that are identified by local school officials.
Good work, Dustin. I’ll definitely be checking out that car show this weekend. Better pick up a toy to donate!

Save Money And The Planet! Black Friday Is Green Friday At All Green Things!
I’ve been in local businesswoman & green living advocate Tanya Peel’s local shop All Green Things a few times now, and I really love the place. [See the little CurrentTV segment featuring All Green Things] The way I feel about the store is that it has a bunch of stuff that you already need to live your life, but the greener, sustainable, environmentally friendly versions.
One of the best things about the store too is that Tanya knows the story behind literally every single product. She has hand selected this stuff, tried it out herself, and stands behind it. Go there, and ask her a question about a product, and you’ll see what I mean!
She is having a promotion at the store this Friday – Black Friday, or in her case Green Friday – where you can get just about 25% off anything in the store and online. She blogs:
Black Friday is going GREEN! All Green Things wants to remind you about our 1 Day Event on November 27th, 2009.
Everything in our Store and On-Line is 25% Off!!!!! Spend less on more meaningful, green gifts. Stock is limited so shop early!On-Line Coupon Code to be entered at checkout: GRNFRI09
Just about everything in the store is on sale, see her blog for a few exceptions. We all have someone on our shopping list that would love an environmental friendly gift, even ourselves! Some categories of items Tanya has in her store include reusable bags, bottles, & containers, baby supplies & gifts (some cool stuff), personal care, pet supplies, home decor and cleaning, and some neat stationary items (including pencils made out of paper that you can feel free to buy for me). Oh, and don’t forget eco-friendly handbags for the ladies! There is actually more cool stuff in the store than even online, you just gotta go in and check the place out.
Some of my favorite items:
- Water Powered Clock (a great gift idea!)
- Klean Kanteen Reusable Bottle (environment & human rights friendly)
- Bike Chain Bottle Openers (these things are so cool)
- Scrappy Puppy (this is the coolest looking stuffed doggy, I really want one!)
- And so much more!
Extended Green Friday hours and location info:
Extended In-Store Hours on Nov. 27th 8AM-8PM
Store Location:
5321 Topanga Canyon Blvd.
Woodland Hills, CA 91364
Man, I really do love that place, so stop in, check it out, and pick up a gift or two, and save some money!! Oh yeah, and the planet.
