Jersey Mike's coming to Woodland Hills

Noticed this a couple of weeks ago, but now we have an opening date courtesy of Eater LA.  This store is opening in place of the defunct Quiznos Sub next to The Habit Burger.

With new locations in Beverly Hills, Monrovia, Calabasas, and Irvine, Jersey Mike’s Subs adds one more to the list with its next store opening in Woodland Hills (22649 Ventura Blvd.) one week from today on October 13. As part of the grand debut, for its first five days of service, Jersey Mike’s will distribute coupons through the community for free subs with a $1 donation benefitting the American Kids Cancer Fund.

Friday's Woodland Hills - July 27, 2010

Looks like there is a multi-day film or TV shoot going on at Friday’s in Woodland Hills this week that has transformed it into Rivetti’s Bar & Restaurant.  If anyone has details please e-mail me!

Update: A Facebook fan tells us that she believes the movie being filmed is Horrible Bosses, starring Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Spacey, and Jason Bateman. Wow.

MILWAUKEE — The Brewers made the most costly cut in franchise history on Monday when they released increasingly ineffective right-hander Jeff Suppan with more than $10 million left on his contract.

Suppan, 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA this season in two starts and 13 relief outings, mostly in mop-up duty, was in the final season of a four-year, $42 million deal that was the richest in club history when he signed it on Christmas Eve 2006. Suppan’s 2010 salary was $12.5 million, and he’s also due a $2 million buyout of his $12.75 million club option for 2011.

“I think we all wanted to try to extend this as long as we could because of our respect for Jeff and what he’s done for the organization and the kind of person he is,” Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said. “He’s one of the classiest guys I’ve been associated with. In the end, it does come down to performance.”

Suppan, 35, is expected to seek a chance to start with another Major League team. He did not participate in interviews on Monday but did release a statement through the team.

“I want to thank [Brewers principal owner] Mark Attanasio and Doug Melvin for all they have done for my family and me, especially how they handled this situation,” it read. “I’ve played with a number of organizations and the Brewers are one of the classiest.

“When I signed in 2007, I was committed to winning and to this day I still am. Nobody is more disappointed with how things have turned out. I enjoyed my time here in Milwaukee, as both a player and a member of the community. As such, I will continue my involvement with the [Brewers Community Foundation] for the remainder of the 2010 season. My commitment to this cause and the people it serves is unwavering.”

As many of you know, Jeff Suppan is a west San Fernando Valley native and owns Soup’s Sports Grill on Ventura Blvd in Woodland Hills.  I guess being fired sucks, but it sucks a whole lot less when you’ve been paid over $40 million.  Check out the rest of the story on MLB.com.

Kate Mantilini rolls out revamped 4 to 7pm weekday Happy Hour.

In keeping with the recent trend among just about all restaurants in Warner Center, Kate Mantilini in Woodland Hills has begun offering discounted food and drink selections in its bar area weekdays from 4 to 7pm.

In addition to $5 house drinks and $6 house martinis, wine selections include Pinot Noir, Cabernet, and Chardonnay by Smoking Loon.  Happy Hour beers priced at $3.75 include Fat Tire, Pyramid Hefeweizen, Sierra Nevada Summerfest.  Discount appetizers and tapas selections are served in the bar area and range from $4.50 to $7.00.  Selections include made to order Guacamole, Tapas Crab Cake, Tapas Ribs, Grilled Artichokes, and several others.

I saw the shiny new sidewalk sign for the happy hour yesterday and decided to call some friends over to check it out with me.  Foods and drinks were very good, and the place was pretty busy by about 6pm.  See images in the gallery below.

LAPD/TOPANGA AREA has an important message for the community!

The Los Angeles Police Department Topanga Division Police Officers will be participating jointly with the West Valley California Highway Patrol in a “TIP-A-COP” fundraiser event to benefit Special Olympics.  It will be at the TGI Fridays at 5919 Canoga Avenue on May 27th between 6pm and 10pm.  Bring the kids and come by to be “waited on” by uniformed LAPD and CHP officers and help raise money for this worthy cause.  You might even be waited on by the Commanding Officer of Topanga Division, Captain John Sherman!

Some of you might not know that I am a fervent supporter of the Michael J Fox Foundation.  I am hoping that through this philanthropy Michael J Fox’s Parkinson’s Disease will one day be cured and  they will make a Back to the Future Part 4.

Goodbye, Koo Koo Roo Woodland Hills Closed

Magic Brands LLC, the now bankrupt Austin, Texas company that owns the Koo Koo Roo and Fuddruckers brands, had sold off their assets to Florida-based Tavistock Group.  While many restaurants from each chain will be closed in the deal, Koo Koo Roo is clearly the redheaded stepchild of the deal with 10 of 13 outlets being scrapped.

Tavistock hopes to transform the long dying Fuddruckers brand into a franchising powerhouse like Virgina-based Five Guys Burgers and Fries, the rapidly expanding franchise-ready version of In-N-Out Burger.  I fully expect all Koo Koo Roo’s to eventually be closed.  It is a chain that lost its direction early in the 2000s with constant and questionable menu and decor changes that left their customers scratching their heads and looking for other dining options.

No word yet on what might move into the now empty Koo Koo Roo space in Woodland Hills, but as always I will keep my eyes on it and keep you posted.
