LAPD/TOPANGA AREA has an important message for the community!

The Los Angeles Police Department Topanga Division Police Officers will be participating jointly with the West Valley California Highway Patrol in a “TIP-A-COP” fundraiser event to benefit Special Olympics.  It will be at the TGI Fridays at 5919 Canoga Avenue on May 27th between 6pm and 10pm.  Bring the kids and come by to be “waited on” by uniformed LAPD and CHP officers and help raise money for this worthy cause.  You might even be waited on by the Commanding Officer of Topanga Division, Captain John Sherman!

Some of you might not know that I am a fervent supporter of the Michael J Fox Foundation.  I am hoping that through this philanthropy Michael J Fox’s Parkinson’s Disease will one day be cured and  they will make a Back to the Future Part 4.

That being said, if you go to either of the 2 Ventura County Denny’s locations listed below on Monday May 10 from 9am to 5pm and donate $1 or more to the MJFF you will get a free stack of pancakes.  Enjoy.

MJFF writes via e-mail:

Join MJFF and Denny’s for “Pancakes for Parkinson’s,” a fundraising event on Monday, May 10, 2010, from 9am-5pm at select Denny’s restaurants in Ventura, California and Hawaii. Any customer who donates $1 to The Michael J. Fox Foundation will receive a free stack of pancakes!

The event is made possible by the generous support of Denny’s franchisee and Team Fox member Ajay Keshap. The following is a list of Denny’s restaurants participating in Pancakes for Parkinson’s:

Woodland Hills Koo Koo Roo Closes Along With 9 Other Locations

Goodbye, Koo Koo Roo Woodland Hills Closed

Goodbye, Koo Koo Roo Woodland Hills Closed

Magic Brands LLC, the now bankrupt Austin, Texas company that owns the Koo Koo Roo and Fuddruckers brands, had sold off their assets to Florida-based Tavistock Group.  While many restaurants from each chain will be closed in the deal, Koo Koo Roo is clearly the redheaded stepchild of the deal with 10 of 13 outlets being scrapped.

Tavistock hopes to transform the long dying Fuddruckers brand into a franchising powerhouse like Virgina-based Five Guys Burgers and Fries, the rapidly expanding franchise-ready version of In-N-Out Burger.  I fully expect all Koo Koo Roo’s to eventually be closed.  It is a chain that lost its direction early in the 2000s with constant and questionable menu and decor changes that left their customers scratching their heads and looking for other dining options.

No word yet on what might move into the now empty Koo Koo Roo space in Woodland Hills, but as always I will keep my eyes on it and keep you posted.

Morton’s Power Hour Is A Great Place To Get Oysters At A Great Price

Written by Girard on April 18, 2010 - 2 Comments

I’ve been to Morton’s in Woodland Hills quite a few times in the past couple of months.  Recently, I got a craving for oysters and I remembered that Morton’s has fresh oysters on their Power Hour happy hour menu for only $1.75 apiece.  Can you say done deal?  I called up some friends and we agreed to meet up there yet again.

Morton's Oysters - $1.75 each during Power Hour

Morton's Oysters - $1.75 each during Power Hour

As you can see the oysters look great, taste great, and come with the full assortment of necessary accoutrements.  I’ve actually been back there a couple of times since for more.  I’ve recently been shunning carbs and well, as far as I can tell, oysters are all protein.  Excellent!

On  this particular night there was also a celebrity in the house, D.L. Hughley.  He was there checking out the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship.  He was among many disappointed bandwagon Butler fans in attendance in the bar area, including myself.  Hughley must live in the area, as I’ve seen him at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in the past as well.

I also had another one of Morton’s $15 Prime Burgers during the Power Hour, and it was great.  I avoided the bread and only had a tiny bit of the excellent mashed potatoes this time around.  Good stuff.  As always, I’m so impressed by the relaxed and cool vibe at Morton’s bar.  It’s a great place.

The Power Hour runs between 5pm to 6:30pm and 9pm to close daily.

Red Hat Restaurant Moves Into Old Mark & Jane’s Place Space

Red Hat Restaurant, Woodland Hills, CA

Red Hat Restaurant, Woodland Hills, CA

As previously blogged, the short lived South African themed restaurant Mark & Jane’s Place closed back in November.  A couple of weeks ago I noticed Persian eatery Red Hat Restaurant has opened in the space, located at 22990 Ventura Blvd (right next door to Topanga Pizza).  Seems like there is also a new salon next door, Studio 9 Hair Design.  Next time I am in the mood for some Persian food I’ll check out Red Hat and see how it is.
